(evan)
Evan had found Chris’s apartment complex and told her cell number, where she would be going and approximately how long the trip should take; which should have been four days at the most, with one spare before the cavalry got called in. It had taken four. It had been some ungodly hour on the fourth when she had finally gotten far enough away from the black hole of reception surrounding the area to actually check her messages on the drive back.
She smiled at Pharoby’s message, her concern for her sister relaxing slightly. She sipped at the espresso she had purchased at a truck stop, wishing for time to sleep. As soon as she got back she would have just enough time for a shower and a few hours of cramming before her exam. It was her own fault, Evan had lost track of time in the woods and at the ruins of the buildings. She was certainly paying for it now; she hadn’t slept solidly in four days. If she was lucky she would be able to finish the exam early and pick Pharoby up at the airport.

True to her word, as soon as Pharoby was clear of the plane and US Customs, she called Evan. Unfortunately the commuter flights were full that morning and she couldn't get a connecting flight until late that afternoon. "Call me, Evan. Oh, wait, you've got a final today. I"m so confused about what day it is....Call me when you're awake. I'm going to go find the cyber cafe and catch up on my emails. My flight leaves out of here about 5:30 pm. So I'm stuck here all day long...." Pharoby babbled to Evan's answering service again. I really need good strong coffee to wake me up.
Pharoby did not take notice of the older man watching her from behind his newspaper. Usually she was well aware of the entire crowd, but she was still running through the translations of the dialect that she was distracted this morning.

Scrubbed clean and with enough caffeine to animate a corpse in her system, Evan had arrived at campus early that morning with her books and laptop. After three hours she took a break, ran home to grab her phone and bolted some breakfast and yet more coffee while she was there.
She listened to Pharoby's message as she walked back to the campus library, books under one arm and laptop slung over a shoulder. Apparently she was in luck; she'd be able to get to the airport by the time Pharoby's flight arrived. Evan dialed Pharoby's number, listening to the phone ring.

Pharoby jumped when her phone rang, as she had been almost asleep, sitting there waiting. It was Evan!
"Evan! Hey sis! How was your final?" she sputtered out.

Evan grinned, "Hey Pharoby! It went pretty well, I think." Either jet-lag was catching up with her sister or she had been asleep. "How was your flight?"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pharoby could tell Evan's reaction, and sent an image of sticking her tongue out at her. "Too long. And they don't have any decent coffee in this airport that isn't less than five dollars a cup," Pharoby giggled. "Everybody must be flying today, because it's been full in the lobby here all day long. And the only flight I could get is the slowpoke, 2 changes. It'll be about 1 before I get there. Are you going to be up? Or should I plan on getting a taxi?"
She noticed finally the older man studying her and wondered why. There wasn't anything special about her looks, other than her strange colored eyes.

Evan laughed. "No, no taxi. I'll be there at midnight." She sent a teasing feeling, and a mental image of her with a raised eyebrow and smirk. Somehow that reminded her; the little garden in the back yard needed weeding badly. Evan sensed slight distraction from the other end of the line, “Something wrong?”

"No, just people staring." Pharoby shook herself mentally for allowing Evan to feel that. "I'm looking forward to a real shower and air conditioning tonight. I don't know how I managed to live there for 3 years when I was younger without it!"

"Simple, you managed to live hot and stinky." Evan teased, her eyes watching a passing guy in a bad mood with a red strip of cloth tied over an arm. Her shoulder itched; that cut wasn't quite healed yet.

"Oh so that's what it was!" Her own shoulder was itching and she inspected it, seeing nothing. "Evan? So, what did you do? My shoulder's itchy..." Pharoby walked down to the coffee stand and ordered some coffee. She noticed the gentleman following her. Much to her chagrin, he paid for her coffee. "Umh, sis. Let me call back in a bit. Gotta run into the little girls' room." She quickly hung up the phone.
"Do I know you, sir?"
He shook his head and handed her an envelope. "My boss wishes to meet with you." He then bowed and disappeared into the crowd. Pharoby could have sworn he clicked his heels when he bowed. Perplexed she inspected the envelope as she headed to her seat back in the lobby area. The outside of the envelope said, "Periwinkle Blue." Looking around quickly, and not noticing anything further, she quickly opened the envelope, her fingers trembling. There was only one person who called her "Periwinkle", and that person had not contacted her in years.
She scan the contents and almost dropped the letter. It wasn't from Michael at all. It was signed "St. Cyr".
"Miss Pharoby, I wish to meet with you and your sister next week. I have enclosed travel arrangements for the two of you. Unless you want your exploits and the true stories of the 250 bodies in Brazil, I suggest you make your way to my place. And bring any information that you have on Adam Kane. If not, your sister will hear of everything you have been doing in Brazil."
Pharoby sat there stunned and upset. She didn't know what to do. Evan didn't know everything about Brazil...and she didn't need to know either.

Evan looked at her phone a little quizzically as she closed it, unsure if she should be thankful for the intervention or not. She stopped, looked at the campus up ahead and frowned. The studying could be done in her room, and the whole place needed a cleaning pretty badly; and so did the car.
Watching the street while she debated Evan noticed another man leaning against a car, a circle of red around his left arm; obviously pissed and waiting. “Just how stupid can you people be?” She turned around and headed home.
To her surprise the weeding was actually pleasant for once, though the normal cleaning was less enjoyable. She found all the wrappers and empty coffee cups in the car and disposed of them. Tired and uneasy, she went into the kitchen and poured a large glass of iced tea, staring meditatively into the golden-brown liquid after she’d taken a few sips.

Pharoby decided it wouldn't be a good idea to break the news to Evan just yet. Sos she didn't call her back until her flight was called, later that afternoon. "Evan, hey! My flight just got called. I'll be glad to get out of this airport. There's been too many people here today, can't think straight."

Evan blinked a few times, hearing her phone ring before she scrambled to answer it. She was still trying to figure out how much time had gone by when she heard Pharoby's voice. She rubbed her eyes, "I know what you mean. Might be that caffiene in my case though." She covered the mouthpeice a moment and sniffed at her now-warm tea. No drugs, no anything; she must be more tired than she thought. "I can't wait for you to get home."

"Me too, sis! I've got to run now before they take off without me. I'll call at my last layover, so you can get some more sleep," Pharoby turned the phone off and sank into her seat gratefully. She was so tense from the chance meeting, that she picked at the inflight meal.
Her first layover went without a problem.
The second layover, she called Evan back.

Evan had poured out the tea and fallen asleep on the couch, making sure the phone was close enough to wake her. She groggily answered the phone when it rang. "Hey, I'm up." A yawn punctuated the end of her sentence.
